Israel Goldberg: What is in a Name?

From Israel Goldberg to George Gale

Israel Goldberg was one of my great uncles, a son of Jacob Goldberg and Pinie Schwartz. It was a surprise to me that the name on his Birth Record from Botosani was Goldenberg, not Goldberg, the name that I was familiar with. The name Israel was Strul in Romanian. He was born 16 Dec 1890 according to this record. This was another name in the evolution of name changes.

One of the Romanians who was responsible for getting the Botosani Records told me that all dates in the Romanian Records use the Julian calendar. This was used in Romania until 1919. To get the Gregorian calendar, 12/ 13 days need to be added.

The original family name was Newman, changed to Goldenberg, then Goldberg for Jacob and for his children. I was told that it was due to his wife, Lillian Sadie Zudick that he changed his name from Israel Goldberg to George Gale.

Israel Goldberg and Lillian Sadie Zudick were married in 1918.

Lillie was born 31 Aug 1895 in Ostropol and died
1 Jan 1997 at Seal Beach, Orange, California.

A Glimpse into the Lives of Sam and Charlie Camlot

A Perspective from Sam Camlot's Daughter

Hearing peoples' stories of what life was like years ago gives a fascinating glimpse of another world. At 86, Harriet shared her childhood memories with me and I am very appreciative. She talks easily about the past, giving insights on what her father and her Uncle Charlie were like.

Sam and Charlie first had a store/ drugstore in downtown Philadelphia but due to the Depression, they went bankrupt. They moved to different areas of Philadelphia after that. Harriet's family moved to Bridge St in northeastern Philadelphia and her uncle's family moved to the southwest.

Both her parents, Sam and Betty ( Singerman ) worked from 8 am to midnight 7 days a week to make ends meet. In back of their store was their kitchen and they lived upstairs. There were 2 bedrooms, a living room and a kitchen. She slept in the same bedroom as her parents. There were boarders: a family with children. The boarders used the upstairs kitchen. There was one bathroom for all of them.

She was an only child. Harriet told me the additional child in the 1940 Census was a definite mistake. She then added that her father didn't have time to have had an affair.

Despite her parents working all the time, Harriet said she did not feel neglected. She would come home for lunches. Her parents were there because they were at their store.

She lived in a gentile neighbourhood. Her elementary school had 10 Jews in the whole school.

Harriet said her Uncle Charlie did not have a "cooperative wife". Rose didn't get up in the morning and Sarita, Bernice and Alvin would have to get themselves to school. The children would come in late and Sarita would have to explain why her brother was late. Their mother would get up at 2-3pm in the afternoon. Rose loved to cook. She spent the nights knitting, crocheting and sending cards to the family.

Bernice joined the army to get away. She loved it. She worked in a clerical role. Sarita was told she was too short, 4'10". She "tried to do something to stretch herself".

Harriet said her father was a giving person, Everyone loved him. If anyone didn't get along with her father, he couldn't get along with anyone.

Charlie was hard to get along with. He was bitter. He wanted to be a doctor. He studied and did exams and became a naturopath. Harriet said that he didn't have any formal education. However according to the 1940 census, Charlie had four years of college education. The 1930 Census has him listed as a "physician: industry, naturopath".

Harriet remembers her father telling her that he was in England for 6 months because he ran out of money. He was 13 and she wondered how he could have managed being by himself. I told her that a man with the name of Israel Gillman was with him.. His birthdate in his Draft Record would make him older than 13 at that time in 1910. He would have been 16. She had also heard that he crossed illegally into Detroit to avoid conscription.

Harriet said her father had a theatre at one point. Interestingly I found information that in Sept 1921 Sam Camlot, a theatre owner in Sherbrooke, along with Joseph Blitt, Bernard Gillman and Isser Singerman formed a corporation.

National Amusement Co., Limited.
Notice is hereby given that under Part I of, the Quebec Companies' Act, 1920, letters patent have been issued by the Lieutenant-Gouverneur of the Province of Quebec, bearing date thirteenth day of September, 1921, incorporating : Joseph Blitt, Bernard Gillman, ; Isser Singerman, Sam Camlot theatre owners ; all of the city of Sherbrooke, in the district of Saint-Francis, for the following purposes :

The powers specified in each paragraph are to be limited or restricted by reference to under the name of "National Amusement Limited", with a total capital stock of twenty thousand dollars ($20,000.00) divided into two hundred (200! shares of one hundred dollars ($100 00) each. Harriet's father never asked anything of her except when she had been labour for 24 hours. Her father told her that his brother came to him in a dream and asked that her son be named after him. So she named her son Charles. The second name Elliot was after the husband of her father's sister, Sarah. His name was Eli and he was a scholar and was a wonderful man.

Harriet's mother was one of 9 children. She was the first to be born in Canada. One brother was killed at 13 years old by a streetcar. Peter Singerman, her grandfather, worked at a newstand by the train station in Montreal, Quebec. He was a quiet man. Her grandmother, Bella was a midwife.

I am very grateful to Harriet for giving me some understanding of the lives of her father and uncle and their families. My hope is that there will be more people who will want to share their stories.

Yosef Yehuda, Father of Zev/ William Gillis/ Gillick

The Significance of Translating Gravestones

This is a direct continuation of my last post. I was waiting for the translation of William Gillis' gravestone.

Deb, my very knowledgable genealogy mentor responded.  She wrote, "William's father is Yosef Yehuda Gillick! William is given as Zev son of Yosef Yehuda. Anna's name is Toyba Chana, daughter of Pinchas. So the gravestone was for Toybe as the man said, but like most Russian Jews with two names, it was the middle name used. "

What does finding out this mean? This now links this family with  the family of Bessie Gillick Manster, one of the Montreal Gillick Branches. William/ Wolf Gillick was a brother to Bessie Gillick Manster.

Important woman
Batia Rebecca
Daughter of Yosef Yehuda
Passed away 12 Tamuz 5699

I knew Bessie's daughter Jeanne Naomi Manster years ago. She was such a warm person who loved children. I am wondering whether she knew any member of the Massachusetts Gillick family. They were linked through her grandfather Yosef Yehuda.

Jeanne Naomi / Nechama was born 11 Oct 1913 and died 26 Feb 2003. She married Sam Beloff, 19 Jan 1943 in Montreal, Quebec. Sam was born 19 Aug 1904 and died 25 Dec 1996. They had 2 children , Barry ( Ora ) and Ruth. Barry told me that he was named after his grandmother, Basya.

Jeanne's parents were Basya Rivka/ Bassie/ Rossie/ Ranka/ Batia Rebecca/ Bessie Gillick and Frank/ Froim/ Ephraim Berkovich ( son of Berko/ Dov ). Jeanne's mother, Bessie was born about 1889 in Ostropol according to her New York Passenger Lists and Border Crossing Records and died 25 Jun 1939. Jeanne's father, Frank Meister/ Manster was born about 1884 in Ulanov Village, Litinsk, Podolia, Russia and died 8 Dec 1949 in Montreal , Quebec. The LI-RA-MA Russian consulate Record has his name as Froim Berkovich Manster, had his birth place, Ulanov. He has a Russian Passport and his military service ended in 1903.

Jeanne had 2 siblings, Hymie Solomon and Lily.

Hymie/ Chaim/ Munish / Mooney was born 15 Jun 1909 in Ostropol and died 31 Mar 1981 in Philadelphia.  He married Lillian Viola Feldman in Philadelphia in 1941. Lillian was born 16 Feb 1914 in Philadelphia and died Nov 1995 in Bustleton, Pennsylvania. They had 2 sons, Steve
(Marilyn Marcus) and Marsha ( Jaffe )

Lily was born 1930 and died in 1990. She  married Barney Present 14 Dec 1957. They had 2 sons, Robert Ephraim and Jeffrey (Erica Person)

Jeanne's father, Frank's  Philadelphia's Passenger Lists shows that he left Liverpool on the ship S.S. Haverford, 19 Mar 1913 and arrived 1 Apr 1913 in Philadelphia. He was heading to his cousin Fridel ( Fred ) Camlot in Quebec. Jeanne ( Nechama ) was 7 and her brother Hymie ( Chaim ) was 9 when they left Liverpool, 26 Feb 1921 with their mother, (Rydka Bassia Maister ) on the S.S. Imperator. This was 8 years after their father/ husband had left. They arrived 7 Mar 1921 in New York and were headed for  Bessie's nephew, Benjamin Berkowitz. The Border Crossing Record shows that it was 3 months later, 17 Jun 1921, when Bessie left Rouses Point, New York by Rutland Train for Amos, Quebec where her husband Frank was.

There are more very possible links to other Gillick branches. Lots to think and write about in future posts.

William Gillis and Anna Glassberg

Gillick Family, a Fascinating Variation of Names

Are William Gillis and his wife Anna Glassberg new people? No. It turns out that at some point, Volko/Valbel/ Wolf/ William either used another variation of the #Gillick name or changed his name from Gillick to Gillis. His wife Pize/ Anna's maiden name was Glassberg.

In the 1930 Census, Valbel Gillick, age 70 and his wife Anna, age 68 were living beside their daughter Pearl, her husband Eli Sohn, poultry market, and their daughter Clara at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea, Massachusetts. The 1930 also gives the ages that they were married: Valbel at age 20 and Pize at age 18.

The Boston Passenger list shows that Volko Gilik, age 67 and his wife Pize, age 64, from Ostropol, left Liverpool, 12 May 1927 on the ship S.S. Samaria and arrived in Boston, 21 May 1927.

This Record shows the vital importance of looking at the two pages of this document. The second page gives the clear name of Volko's brother, Gdal ( Gedalia ) Gilik in Ostropol and their daughter Pearl Son, at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea.

In 1937 the US City Directories gives the same home residence of 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea. Importantly there is another entry for a poultry business at 84 Fourth St for  William Gillis. This matches with the information in the 1930 Census, indicating that his son-in-law worked in a poultry market.

The lure of finding the Gillick connections to my grandmother Sophie Gillick and the ancestral link held strong.

I had found out that Chana Gilick  on her arrival on the ship S.S. Canada , 21 Sep 1921 had her cousin Louis Gillick at 14 Oliver St in Sherbrooke as her contact.

In Chana's Oct 1922 Border Crossing, she gave the name of her brother-in-law Sam Mindick at 46 Market St in Boston.

I had found Chana's sister Sarah Gillick's 6 Jun 1922 Marriage Record. She married Sam Mindick . More research helped find more records

Sura Gilick, born 29 Apr 1901 , in her 21 Jun 1921 Ocean Crossing Record on the ship S.S. Sicilian, gave her father's name as Welwel , in Ostropol and  her destination contact in Sherbrooke, Quebec, her cousins, Louis and Joseph Gilick.

In her Jul 1922 Border Crossing she was going to her husband Sam Mindick at 46 Market St, Brighton, Massachusetts. She gave her father's name as Wolf.

Way back in Aug 2010, I had received this communication from Sarah's daughter through Ancestry

From Gloria Jacobson: Aug 2010
"Yes, we think her maiden name was Gilick ( various spellings have been seen ) . I guess you found the marriage record in Montreal. Another theory (from some records) is that Gilick may have been her Mother's maiden name. She immigrated from Ostropol to Montreal in 1922 where she was met by my Father who sponsored her and they married there and then she crossed the border to the U.S. at St. Albans. She had a sister , Anna or Hannah who also came over in 1921. They settled in Boston. There are other sisters also who did not immigrate as far as we know. Her father was William Wolfe (don't know if "Wolfe" was a middle name or the real last name). A few of us did some research for the last few years, so that is what we found. Her birthdate is listed as April 29, 1901."

"There may be some cousins in in New Jersey. Some descendants of my mother's sister, Pearl, came to the U.S. & married. The last names are Alshansky & Schneideroff."

Further research on Jewish gen gave valuable information on name variations. The Hebrew was Wolf, the Yiddish was Zev/ Wolf , the Yiddish nickname was variations of Velvil/ Volko and the US is Warren/ William/ Wolf/ Harry.

The 1940 Census  gave information on Sarah's family but very sadly, she was in a mental illness facility. Her Massachusetts Death Index has Sarah's death date as 19 Jul 1950

1940 Census:

Sam, 43 was living at 23 Washington St, Suffolk, Boston, MA with his father Louis, 75, his step mother, Mollie, 58 and his 4 children: Lillian, 16, education H-2, Morris, 15, H-1, Jennie, 13, grade 8, and Gloria, 5.

Sam is listed as married but Sarah is not included with the family. She is listed as a patient at the Metropolitan State Hospital, Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

They lived in the same house in 1935. He rented his home at $45/month.

Sam worked as a meat salesman in a wholesale meat business. He received an income other than his salary.

This week I made a breakthrough. Many resources were involved in helping me find the obituary of William Gillis ( new name and the vital clue to finding his obituary, burial place and gravestone ) and the obituary of his daughter, Pearl Son ( spelled this way )

Boston Public Library: 617- 859-2018 for looking up obituaries
Jewish Cemeteries of Massachusetts: 617-244-6509
Cemetery Property Caretaker for Everett Chevra ( Chebra )  Kadisha: 617- 387-3980 Ext.112 (where Pearl was buried )
Chevra Mishna Cemetery, Lynn, Massachusetts ( where William Gillis was buried )
Volunteer contact whom I spoke to today who gave me the location of  William Gillis' gravestone
He talked to the caretaker who took the picture of the gravestone.

The obituaries helped me learn:

William Gillis/ Gillick was buried in the Chevra Mishna Cemetery in Lynn, Massachusetts rather than where his daughter Pearl was buried in Everett

Wife Pize/ Anna’s maiden name is Glassberg

Daughter Pearl Gillick Sohn/ Son’s daughter Clara’s married name is Kipnes

What is a mystery is that there is no mention of their other daughters.

I was hoping that there may have been clues on what happened to Chana/ Hanna.

There also was no mention of the third daughter Sarah/ Sura nor her 4 children, Lillian  (Saul Rubin), Morris
(Charlotte), Jeanette ( Leslie Goodman ), died 6 Feb 2009 and Gloria ( Arthur Jacobson )

Sarah’s children are not mentioned as grandchildren in her father’s obituary so that is another mystery.

The gravestone picture solved the question of when and where Anna/ Pize had died and was buried. The volunteer for the Chevra Mishna Cemetery ( burial place named in the obituary ) told me that the Gillis name  beside the one for William Gillis was not clear. He said the name was Toybe, an unknown to me.  Today when I received the burial picture that the maintenance worker took, I found out that the gravestone was for William and his wife Anna. She died 15 Feb 1958.

The next step is finding out the translation of the Hebrew which will lead to the discovery of the fathers' names.

Esther Goldberg Stein

Esther Goldberg, a Life Cut Short at Only 33 Years Old

I had heard of Bea Oberhand, one of the many relatives who moved to California. My mother spoke very warmly of her.  I also knew how she very tragically lost her mother who died in childbirth when Bea's brother Oscar Jay was born.

This is the translation of Esther's Botosani Birth Record

Esther married Hyman Stein, 5 Dec 1915 in Montreal. They moved to New York. Bea was born 29 Oct 1916. In 1920, the family lived at 1185 Fulton Ave, Bronx. Esther died in childbirth. Her son, Oscar Jay Stein was born 21 Nov 1921.

After her mother died, Bea went to live with her grandmother until her father remarried. She became very close to the Goldbergs especially to Aunt Minnie who was like an older sister to her. Aunt Minnie was really loved by many family members!

Bea's father , Hyman married Ethel Apter. There is a 1925 Census that shows the family living at 1610 East 22nd St. Hyman and Ethel had a daughter, Helen , born in 1928. She did not get married.

Bea married Morris/ Moe Oberhand, born 11 May 1918 and died 31 Jan 2005. Bea died 2 Nov 2005. They had 2 sons, Eric ( Simin Toobian ) and Robert ( Viviane E. Lellouche ).

Oscar Jay Stein was called Oscar when he was a young boy. Then he changed his name to Jay Stone. He was named after his grandfather, Jacob Goldberg.

He went into manufacturing with his father-in-law and became President of the Raincoat Company, Naman. That is what led me to think Naiman was the original name.

Jay's obituary describes the life he led.
STONE--Oscar Jay, passed away peacefully after a long illness on February 15th, 2007. Loving husband of the late Pearl. ( Goldman ) Beloved father of Elliot and cherished uncle of Wendy Sue (Asher) Fogel. Adored brother of Helen Stein and the late Elaine and Arnold Tanzer, Selma D. Marquis
( Elaine and Selma are his wife, Pearl’s siblings ), and Bea and Moe Oberhand. Also a dear uncle to Robert and Eric Oberhand. A long time resident of Manhattan, formerly of Rockville Centre, NY, this handsome, elegant and charming young man enlisted in the US Navy in WWII and flew hundreds of missions in the Pacific Theater, becoming one of the Navy’s most highly decorated pilots. Although he continued to fly throughout his life, after the War, he turned his attention to the world of fashion, and became President of one of the country's largest privately owned women's coat companies, Naman Rainwear. Jay loved his life, his family, his golden retrievers and all things of beauty. He was forever young, and shall be forever in our hearts. Newman, Original Name of My Great Grandfather Jacob Goldberg

Newman Family of My Great Grandfather Jacob #Goldberg

What a long way I have come from first finding out that my great grandfather, Jacob Goldberg's original name was Neiman or #Newman. In fact if the family name was written at all in the Botosani, Romanian Records, it was Goldenberg. That was a huge surprise as I had always heard the name was Goldberg! Surnames were rarely recorded in those early records.

Jacob's mother smuggled Jacob from #Ushitzer Podolier to Botosani, Romania. The belief was that his mother Malca knew a branch of the Goldberg family and sent him to that family.

What else had I originally found out 4 years ago  from what Jacob Goldberg's granddaughter, Bea Oberhand had written at least 25 years ago?

Jacob Goldberg had a brother Moishe Neiman, who remained in Russia.
Moishe's daughter moved to New York  and was known as Bobba Cooper.
Her children from her first marriage were Morris Walder and Mrs. Cooperman.
Her children from her second marriage were Minnie, Mary and Irving Cooper.
Cousins, Louis and Kaufman Walder, from the Russian town of Ushitzer Podolier came to Montreal and then moved to New York.

From the 1988 Tape, Aunt Minnie related that Jacob sent money to Kaufman Walder to come to Montreal. Jacob then found out that relatives lived in New York.. His niece, Bobba Cooper, invited him to the wedding of her oldest daughter.  I heard that my great grandparents, Jacob and Pinie, brought Esther to the wedding because she was of marriagable age. There she met Hyman Stein at the wedding in 1914.

Just this week I found some census information that I had written down when I started my genealogy search in 2010. It was for a family of Hyman Cooper and Beckie Cooper. I had looked at the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Censuses.  I went over all the names and also looked at the New York Census of 1915 and 1925.

Several names of the children were there,  Morris, Minnie and Mary.  There was an Irving ( could the person be Isidore? ) Sarah, a new name, was in the 1910 Census and was the oldest daughter in this family. She was not with the family in the 1920 Census so this would fit if this was the wedding that the Goldbergs went to in 1914. She could be Mrs. Cooperman.

The 1930 census provided more clues!.What was the clincher was finding an A. Newman, age 50, born 1880 in Russia and noted as the brother-in-law of the head of the family. This would mean that he was "Beckie's " brother. So the name they used was Newman not Neiman. Beckie / Rebecca was the name that Bobba used in New York.

Searching now under the name Newman brought me to an Ancestry Family Tree with the familiar names and much more. I contacted the owner  by e-mail messages through Ancestry and I realized I had found the family!!

Charles Mehlman wrote that "Bobba" Cooper was his great aunt.
" Her sister Lena Newman married a Goldberg. Rebecca Newman/ Walder/Cooper 's father is Velvul as shown on my tree but was likely Moishe. I have no info on him other than he married my great grandmother Esther Rosenberg. She is buried in the First Uschitzer Plots in Mt Hebron, Flushing, Queens, New York."
"My father's mother Kate Newman was the sister of Rebecca Newman. I did call one of the Newmans. She said her father, Sam Newman, brother of Rebecca was sent to the Goldbergs and adopted by them. Same story, different people. We have Goldbergs in our family through marriage. Lena Newman married Meyer Goldberg. I knew him and Lena as a child. I never knew my grandmother as she died when I was a year old. Meyer died in 1953 and Lena in 1965."
"You mention Kaufman Walder and his brother Louis. They are somehow related to Rebecca's first husband Benish Walder. My father saw the brothers on a regular basis as a young man and I saw them as a child. I recently learned that they had come to the US from Canada."

Charles invited me to see his Tree so I have learned the names of an overwhelming number of people.
It will be very interesting  to see the gravestone of Rebecca or one of her siblings to find out what her father's name is: whether it was Moishe as I was told or Velvul that Charles was told. It would be great to find out what happened to this brother of my great grandfather Jacob.

Moishe/ Velvul's wife Esther Rosenberg died 22 Jul 1922. Upon learning of other Newmans, I looked at the Census Records. Esther lived with her daughter Lena , husband Meyer and their sons Dave and Ben in 1920. Esther was 80, widowed; had immigrated in 1899. So that would mean Esther was born about 1840.
Moishe/ Velvul and Esther had 6 children

Rebecca/ Beckie/ Bobba Newman was born in Ushitzer Podolia about 1875 and died 30 Mar 1959. She and her first husband Benish Walder had 3 children.

Sarah, born about 1892 ( according to the 1910 Census ) died 23 Feb 1953. She married Sam Cooperman, born 15 Jul 1891 and died 27 Mar 1955. They had one son Bernie, born 14 Dec 1928  (Miriam Gertov )

Morris/ Murray was born 14 Jan 1898 and died 10 May 1980. He married Ethel Allahut, born 1 Sep 1901 and died 27 Jun 1966. They had 3 children, Evelyn, born 9 Sep 1922 ( Charles Natkin ), Bernie, born 14 Jan 1927 died 15 Oct 2010 in Florida (Evelyn Leibowitz, Leona Mish), and Marty, born 14 Jan 1927 ( Doris Solomon )

Harry married Rose Heftman. Rose was born 19 Jul 1901 and died 19 Jun 1989.
