Yosef Yehuda, Father of Zev/ William Gillis/ Gillick

The Significance of Translating Gravestones

This is a direct continuation of my last post. I was waiting for the translation of William Gillis' gravestone.

Deb, my very knowledgable genealogy mentor responded.  She wrote, "William's father is Yosef Yehuda Gillick! William is given as Zev son of Yosef Yehuda. Anna's name is Toyba Chana, daughter of Pinchas. So the gravestone was for Toybe as the man said, but like most Russian Jews with two names, it was the middle name used. "

What does finding out this mean? This now links this family with  the family of Bessie Gillick Manster, one of the Montreal Gillick Branches. William/ Wolf Gillick was a brother to Bessie Gillick Manster.

Important woman
Batia Rebecca
Daughter of Yosef Yehuda
Passed away 12 Tamuz 5699

I knew Bessie's daughter Jeanne Naomi Manster years ago. She was such a warm person who loved children. I am wondering whether she knew any member of the Massachusetts Gillick family. They were linked through her grandfather Yosef Yehuda.

Jeanne Naomi / Nechama was born 11 Oct 1913 and died 26 Feb 2003. She married Sam Beloff, 19 Jan 1943 in Montreal, Quebec. Sam was born 19 Aug 1904 and died 25 Dec 1996. They had 2 children , Barry ( Ora ) and Ruth. Barry told me that he was named after his grandmother, Basya.

Jeanne's parents were Basya Rivka/ Bassie/ Rossie/ Ranka/ Batia Rebecca/ Bessie Gillick and Frank/ Froim/ Ephraim Berkovich ( son of Berko/ Dov ). Jeanne's mother, Bessie was born about 1889 in Ostropol according to her New York Passenger Lists and Border Crossing Records and died 25 Jun 1939. Jeanne's father, Frank Meister/ Manster was born about 1884 in Ulanov Village, Litinsk, Podolia, Russia and died 8 Dec 1949 in Montreal , Quebec. The LI-RA-MA Russian consulate Record has his name as Froim Berkovich Manster, had his birth place, Ulanov. He has a Russian Passport and his military service ended in 1903.

Jeanne had 2 siblings, Hymie Solomon and Lily.

Hymie/ Chaim/ Munish / Mooney was born 15 Jun 1909 in Ostropol and died 31 Mar 1981 in Philadelphia.  He married Lillian Viola Feldman in Philadelphia in 1941. Lillian was born 16 Feb 1914 in Philadelphia and died Nov 1995 in Bustleton, Pennsylvania. They had 2 sons, Steve
(Marilyn Marcus) and Marsha ( Jaffe )

Lily was born 1930 and died in 1990. She  married Barney Present 14 Dec 1957. They had 2 sons, Robert Ephraim and Jeffrey (Erica Person)

Jeanne's father, Frank's  Philadelphia's Passenger Lists shows that he left Liverpool on the ship S.S. Haverford, 19 Mar 1913 and arrived 1 Apr 1913 in Philadelphia. He was heading to his cousin Fridel ( Fred ) Camlot in Quebec. Jeanne ( Nechama ) was 7 and her brother Hymie ( Chaim ) was 9 when they left Liverpool, 26 Feb 1921 with their mother, (Rydka Bassia Maister ) on the S.S. Imperator. This was 8 years after their father/ husband had left. They arrived 7 Mar 1921 in New York and were headed for  Bessie's nephew, Benjamin Berkowitz. The Border Crossing Record shows that it was 3 months later, 17 Jun 1921, when Bessie left Rouses Point, New York by Rutland Train for Amos, Quebec where her husband Frank was.

There are more very possible links to other Gillick branches. Lots to think and write about in future posts.

William Gillis and Anna Glassberg

Gillick Family, a Fascinating Variation of Names

Are William Gillis and his wife Anna Glassberg new people? No. It turns out that at some point, Volko/Valbel/ Wolf/ William either used another variation of the #Gillick name or changed his name from Gillick to Gillis. His wife Pize/ Anna's maiden name was Glassberg.

In the 1930 Census, Valbel Gillick, age 70 and his wife Anna, age 68 were living beside their daughter Pearl, her husband Eli Sohn, poultry market, and their daughter Clara at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea, Massachusetts. The 1930 also gives the ages that they were married: Valbel at age 20 and Pize at age 18.

The Boston Passenger list shows that Volko Gilik, age 67 and his wife Pize, age 64, from Ostropol, left Liverpool, 12 May 1927 on the ship S.S. Samaria and arrived in Boston, 21 May 1927.

This Record shows the vital importance of looking at the two pages of this document. The second page gives the clear name of Volko's brother, Gdal ( Gedalia ) Gilik in Ostropol and their daughter Pearl Son, at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea.

In 1937 the US City Directories gives the same home residence of 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea. Importantly there is another entry for a poultry business at 84 Fourth St for  William Gillis. This matches with the information in the 1930 Census, indicating that his son-in-law worked in a poultry market.

The lure of finding the Gillick connections to my grandmother Sophie Gillick and the ancestral link held strong.

I had found out that Chana Gilick  on her arrival on the ship S.S. Canada , 21 Sep 1921 had her cousin Louis Gillick at 14 Oliver St in Sherbrooke as her contact.

In Chana's Oct 1922 Border Crossing, she gave the name of her brother-in-law Sam Mindick at 46 Market St in Boston.

I had found Chana's sister Sarah Gillick's 6 Jun 1922 Marriage Record. She married Sam Mindick . More research helped find more records

Sura Gilick, born 29 Apr 1901 , in her 21 Jun 1921 Ocean Crossing Record on the ship S.S. Sicilian, gave her father's name as Welwel , in Ostropol and  her destination contact in Sherbrooke, Quebec, her cousins, Louis and Joseph Gilick.

In her Jul 1922 Border Crossing she was going to her husband Sam Mindick at 46 Market St, Brighton, Massachusetts. She gave her father's name as Wolf.

Way back in Aug 2010, I had received this communication from Sarah's daughter through Ancestry

From Gloria Jacobson: Aug 2010
"Yes, we think her maiden name was Gilick ( various spellings have been seen ) . I guess you found the marriage record in Montreal. Another theory (from some records) is that Gilick may have been her Mother's maiden name. She immigrated from Ostropol to Montreal in 1922 where she was met by my Father who sponsored her and they married there and then she crossed the border to the U.S. at St. Albans. She had a sister , Anna or Hannah who also came over in 1921. They settled in Boston. There are other sisters also who did not immigrate as far as we know. Her father was William Wolfe (don't know if "Wolfe" was a middle name or the real last name). A few of us did some research for the last few years, so that is what we found. Her birthdate is listed as April 29, 1901."

"There may be some cousins in in New Jersey. Some descendants of my mother's sister, Pearl, came to the U.S. & married. The last names are Alshansky & Schneideroff."

Further research on Jewish gen gave valuable information on name variations. The Hebrew was Wolf, the Yiddish was Zev/ Wolf , the Yiddish nickname was variations of Velvil/ Volko and the US is Warren/ William/ Wolf/ Harry.

The 1940 Census  gave information on Sarah's family but very sadly, she was in a mental illness facility. Her Massachusetts Death Index has Sarah's death date as 19 Jul 1950

1940 Census:

Sam, 43 was living at 23 Washington St, Suffolk, Boston, MA with his father Louis, 75, his step mother, Mollie, 58 and his 4 children: Lillian, 16, education H-2, Morris, 15, H-1, Jennie, 13, grade 8, and Gloria, 5.

Sam is listed as married but Sarah is not included with the family. She is listed as a patient at the Metropolitan State Hospital, Lexington, Middlesex, Massachusetts.

They lived in the same house in 1935. He rented his home at $45/month.

Sam worked as a meat salesman in a wholesale meat business. He received an income other than his salary.

This week I made a breakthrough. Many resources were involved in helping me find the obituary of William Gillis ( new name and the vital clue to finding his obituary, burial place and gravestone ) and the obituary of his daughter, Pearl Son ( spelled this way )

Boston Public Library: 617- 859-2018 for looking up obituaries
Jewish Cemeteries of Massachusetts: 617-244-6509
Cemetery Property Caretaker for Everett Chevra ( Chebra )  Kadisha: 617- 387-3980 Ext.112 (where Pearl was buried )
Chevra Mishna Cemetery, Lynn, Massachusetts ( where William Gillis was buried )
Volunteer contact whom I spoke to today who gave me the location of  William Gillis' gravestone
He talked to the caretaker who took the picture of the gravestone.

The obituaries helped me learn:

William Gillis/ Gillick was buried in the Chevra Mishna Cemetery in Lynn, Massachusetts rather than where his daughter Pearl was buried in Everett

Wife Pize/ Anna’s maiden name is Glassberg

Daughter Pearl Gillick Sohn/ Son’s daughter Clara’s married name is Kipnes

What is a mystery is that there is no mention of their other daughters.

I was hoping that there may have been clues on what happened to Chana/ Hanna.

There also was no mention of the third daughter Sarah/ Sura nor her 4 children, Lillian  (Saul Rubin), Morris
(Charlotte), Jeanette ( Leslie Goodman ), died 6 Feb 2009 and Gloria ( Arthur Jacobson )

Sarah’s children are not mentioned as grandchildren in her father’s obituary so that is another mystery.

The gravestone picture solved the question of when and where Anna/ Pize had died and was buried. The volunteer for the Chevra Mishna Cemetery ( burial place named in the obituary ) told me that the Gillis name  beside the one for William Gillis was not clear. He said the name was Toybe, an unknown to me.  Today when I received the burial picture that the maintenance worker took, I found out that the gravestone was for William and his wife Anna. She died 15 Feb 1958.

The next step is finding out the translation of the Hebrew which will lead to the discovery of the fathers' names.

Another Abraham Gillick

Family of Edel Gillick Camlot

Edel/ Adel/ Etta/ Ethel Gillick, mother of the Camlots, and her husband Israel Kamlut did not immigrate.
The way I found out about Edel's family is through her nephew, Lawrence, who shared  his grandmother Nechama / Emma Gillick  Wolfson/ Wilson's memories of her siblings.

It is great when someone connects with a name or record on an Ancestry Tree. This is what happened to Deb who has spent countless valuable hours researching people from Ostropol and Staro-Konstaninen and building a Tree that connects the thousands of people with those origins.

We depend on the descendants stepping forward with what they know and remember. Piecing together all those sometimes disconnected fragments can provide so many clues in understanding relationships.

Nechama / Emma  Gillick lived with her grandson, Lawrence for 16 years and it was he who shared what his grandmother had told him many years ago. One of her sisters had been a mother to the Camlots. That would mean that Nechama was the sister of Edel Gillick Camlot. Did any family members have contact many years ago? I have yet to find out!

Nechama was born about Jan 1857 in Ostropol and died in Montreal 24 Aug 1945. Along with her sister Edel, she had 3 other siblings, a sister Tanna who had a daughter Shifra Greenfield in Vinnitsa, a sister Rose of New York and a brother Abraham. Abraham may have had the name Kally which was found to be a variant of Gillick. Their father's name was Abraham which I found out from the translation of Nechama's gravestone. Abraham was born about 1830 in Ostropol and died about 1856 in Ostropol.

It is important to sort out all the similar and same names! Deb has helped with this by sending me this e-mail. "Nechama's brother, born around 1856 ( not her father) would be Chaim Abraham and the likeliest father to Joe/ Louis/ Jacob Meir." As well she wrote, "The surname Kally was just the memory of the last name from Lawrence. He had never heard the name Gillick before. I think the name Kally never had a separate existence, just a name that sounded something like that- Kally, Gally, Gallik is not a far stretch."

Nechama had 4 daughters: Mary, Leah, Annie and Lillian. She was married before 1890 to Barnet (Boruch) Wolfson in Ostropol but he left the family sometime during the childhood of his daughters. Nechama departed from Rotterdam on the ship, S.S. Rotterdam, 8 Jul 1902 and arrived 14 Jul 1902 in New York. Her 2 daughters Leah ( Leia )and Lillian ( Libe ) were with her. The name of a daughter M. Gold, daughter, at 220 Clinton St, New York was where they were heading. The identity of that daughter is uncertain; she may have been daughter Mary. In the 1911 Census, Nechama used the name Wilson and called herself a widow.

In her daughter Anne's wedding invitation, she also used the name Wilson.

The name Wolfson was on her gravestone.

The daughters:

Mary/ Miriam Wilson/ Wolfson, born Mar 1890 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia. She married Joseph Hausberg about 1915 in Montreal. They had 2 children, Rose and Benny ( Boruch ). Rose was born about 1914 in Montreal and married Lewis Brook. Benny was born in 1916. Mary died 22 Jan 1936 in Montreal.

Leah was born about 1891 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia  and died about 1952 in Montreal.

Annie/ Chana Wilson ( Wolfson )was born Apr 1892 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia. She died in Montreal. She married Chatzkel/ Ezekiel Garmaise, 14 Jun 1917 in Lachine, Quebec. Ezekiel was born 1886 in Ostropol and died 10 Jan 1955 in Montreal, Quebec. They had 3 sons Boris, David and Lawrence.

Lillian/ Liba Wilson ( Wolfson ), born Apr 1893 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia. Her first marriage was to Abraham Levine, 19 Sep 1920 in Lachine, Quebec. She married Sam Lazar, 5 Nov 1933 in Montreal.

It would be very meaningful if someone would recognize these names and be able to offer more evidence that this is indeed the family of Edel Gillick Camlot and Abraham Gillick. What this would mean is that would link all their descendants. That would explain  how Fanny Gillick was a cousin to her husband Fred Camlot. I had heard that they were cousins.. This would offer the explanation: Fanny's grandfather Abraham and Fred's mother Edel were siblings. What also follows is that would mean that Jacob from Chicago and Louis and Joe Gillick from Sherbrooke, Quebec were first cousins to the Camlot siblings. Joe attended the Bar Mitzvah of Jack Camlot's grandson, Irving. There was a connection!

A totally other surprise and intriguing was finding that the address of Annie Wilson/ Wolfson's wedding invitation of 92 Prince Arthur Street in 1917 is the same address as another relative on my mother's side who lived at the same address in the same year of 1917. Ida Schwartz married Israel Meyer Randolph, 28 Jan 1917. The address at the time of their son Moses/ Morris' birth, born 12 Nov 1917 was 92 Prince Arthur. It would be great if some other connection would emerge from this and I could find out about this Schwartz family!

Was Fraidel Filshstein Gillick the mother of Joe, Louis and Jacob?

How Accurate is the Age in the Census Records?

My interest in genealogy started 4 years ago. When I  started looking at pictures that my grandparents had, there were many people who were a complete mystery. Where were these pictures kept when my grandparents were alive?

One picture that interested me was Joe Gillick sitting on a park bench with my grandmother who also was smiling. It was rare to see my grandmother looking so content. To me that picture was a treasure. Who was he?

Abe and Sam Echenberg with Joe Gillick (noted with "2nd wife, third generation in calendar). Photo scanned from the calendar prepared by Hope Echenberg Finestone and Myron and Eva Echenberg for the 1999 Echenberg Family Reunion, Quebec, Canada
Dean Echenberg

With the help of Dean Echenberg who grew up in Sherbrooke, I learned that Joe lived with Dean's family. Joe always seemed to hang around Dean's father Sydney as Sydney was athletic and was the protector of Jewish kids in Sherbrooke. In the 1911 Census, Joe lived with Sam and Fannie Echenberg and their 2 children , Isadore and Maurice, as well as Sam's brother Jack and his sister Clara. Beside them were Sam's brother Louis, his wife Basil/ Basya and their 2 children Sydney (Shea) and Max. There definitely seemed to be a very close connection with him and the Echenbergs

According to the 1911 census, Joe was born in January 1889. His father was Chaim Abraham Gillick. I learned this from the translation of his gravestone. Joe died 7 Jun 1956 and was buried in Sherbrooke.

Who was Joe Gillick's mother?

Fraidel Filshtein (born about 1856 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia and died in Sherbrooke, 14 Apr 1931) was remembered by her Echenberg relatives as being a Gillick. This is very intriguing since there are 2 brothers, Joe and his brother Louis Gillick who immigrated to Sherbrooke.

We do know that Fraidel  married Israel Echenberg and had 5 children. Louis, Dean's grandfather, was the first born, April 1880 in Russia. This would mean that her children with her first husband Gillick would have to have been born before 1880. Joe 's birthdate would be off by 10 years from the 1911 Census birthdate, He would have been born ~1879.

That would mean that Fraidel would have married Chaim Abraham Gillick and was the mother of Louis Gillick, born about 1876, Jacob Meier, born 10 Nov 1887 and Joe, born abut 1879.

The further connection that links brothers, Joe and Louis and Fraidel was centred around Fraidel's third marriage to a widower, Samuel Genat. Fraidel's second husband, Israel, had died 29 Jul 1918 in Ostropol. The date was shown in the Sherbrooke Yizkor Tablets. Fraidel had arrived 20 Aug 1921 with her 3 youngest children, Jack, Claire and Isadore. She married Samuel Genat 28 Sep 1927 according to the Drouin Quebec Vital Records. What is interesting is that one of the witnesses is Joe Gillick. As well, when Fraidel died 14 Apr 1931, it was Joe Gillick who again was a witness. Furthermore Samuel Genat lived with both Joe and his brother Louis on 41 Alexander in Sherbrooke in 1935 as shown in the Canada, Voters Lists. so the level of association is clearly close!

Deb had done all this research yet I still can not understand how the birthdates could vary by 10 years and why Joe would not clearly state his birthdate as 1879 if that is what it was? I went back to Dean who knew Joe, who had lived with him. Dean initially thought Joe was just a few years older than his father Sydney who was born in 1908. With this new information, I asked him what he thought. He answered with the question he was reflecting on, "Was Joe Gillick 25 years older than my father, ie was Joe the same age as my grandfather? It is very difficult to tell and I am not sure. Joe was beardless and eunuchoid and it is almost impossible to guess his age. He was never referred to as uncle by my father but simply as Yussel. He was quite differential to my father because he worked for him, so there was a curious connection. I think that could substantiate a closer relationship than simply one of normal work.

We have not been able to find Joe's Passenger Record. Did he immigrate with another family? What all this reinforces is that dates on records are just part of the picture, that being able to reflect on our memories and brainstorm with others is so vital!

Understanding the Information in Ocean Crossing Records

Marck ( spelled that way ) Gillick was one of the 12 children of Shaia and Batsheva Gillick.

His oldest brother Louis, a butcher, had arrived 5 Jul 1913 in Halifax. He was the first of the family to immigrate.

Next, sister Leika  ( Leah ) arrived in New York, 14 Aug 1920 with the 3 siblings of her mother and their families. Batsheva Horowitz Gillick's family included her sister Feiga and family Schnirmer, children, Luba and Elia; her brother Morris's wife, Beila and children, Mordko, Sonia and Elia, her sister Reba and family Schoichet and children, Elia, Jozef, Chane and Wolf. Leika/ Leah headed for her Uncle Abraham Schnirman at 89 Hopkins, Brooklyn, New York.
Also on the ship was Sosie Kamlut, one of the Camlot children.

In this record, at first you would think that the year that Mordko ( Mordechai )/ Marck arrived on the S.S.Corsican was 1921. However looking closely at the top, there is a stamped year of 1922. As well, finding the Ocean Crossing for his sister Chaika (Ida), 12 years old, had her travelling on the same ship on the same date. They departed 17 Jan 1922 and arrived 31 Jan 1922 in Saint John, New Brunswick. They both had their brother as the person they were heading to at 619 Colonial Ave. The only brother in Montreal at the time was their older brother Louis.

Curiosity had me wondering why both Marck and Ida had Rovno, Poland as their place of birth and Radzomy, Poland as the place their father was at. I knew the family was from Ostropol.

Deb, an amazingly knowledgable person who has helped me immensely, explained the historical context. Civil war resulted in Poland taking over large parts of what had been Russia. What had been Volyn or Volhynnia Russia was the Polish province of Wolyn and Rovno was the governmental seat.  As Deb wrote:" Ostropol Jews largely fled; estimates were that 50% had sought shelter in large cities like Lemberg ( Lvov today ), Warsaw and Ternopil.  Many others went only as far as the nearest stable Polish authority, ie. Rovno. Some lied about birth towns and residence towns, because that let them come in as Poles, a nation that Canada had established relations during a time in which relations with the new Soviet government had been suspended "

On 23 Jun 1923, parents, Shaia and Batsheva with their sons Mechyl ( Max ), age 10, Moszko (Morris), age 8, and Dawid ( David ), age 6, arrived on the S.S. Montrose in Quebec City, They headed for their son/ oldest brother, Leib ( Louis ) at 11 Joseph St, Quebec City. It had been 10 years since Louis had left so he had not even seen his 3 youngest brothers.

Louis ( Yekutiel Leib ) Gilick ( spelled with 1 L)  was born about 1896 and died 29 Feb 1936 in Montreal, Quebec. He married Ettie Usheroff,  7 Jun 1931 in Montreal. Ettie was born 22 Oct 1908 and died 1 Nov 1999.

Sonia Gillick was born Jan 1899 and died in Argentina in 1985. She married Shlomo Kaplan, born 31 Dec 1899 in Lyubar, Poland.

Marck Gillick was born 18 Apr 1901 and died 17 Aug 1983 in Montreal, Quebec. He married Toba Miller ( Miszonznik ), 29 Jun 1943 in Montreal. Toba was born 3 Mar 1910 in Bialystok, Grodno and died 7 May 1989.

Leika ( Leah Pearl ) was 17 according to the Ocean Crossing in 1920 which would make her birthdate as 1903. However  her 1938 gravestone has her age 29 and her burial record has her age 30. That would mean that she was born about  1909. Leah died 22 Jul 1938.

Ida Gillick was born 25 Dec 1908 and died 1 Jul 2004 in Montreal. She married Morris Trager, 2 Mar 1930 in Montreal, Quebec. Morris was born 15 May 1904 and died 30 Jan 1996.

Max Gillick was 20 when he died, 17 Mar 1930 in Montreal, Quebec.

Morris Gillick was born 14 Feb 1913 and died 31 Jan 1997. He didn't get married.

David Gillick was born 15 Sep 1915 and died 11 Dec 2000. He married Diane Greenberg in 1940. Diane was born 6 Jan 1921 and died 26 Jan 2013 in Montreal, Quebec

Glick and Chaplick Families

Another large family  and more cousins: Glick and Chaplick  Family

This started with a picture postcard addressed to my grandparents. Through Viewmate , part of Jewishgen, the Yiddish was translated.
Front Row:
Hannah ( Chana), Sonia's daughter
Harry Aron Chaplick
Back Row:
Sonia Gilick/Gillick/ Gillik/Glick
Louis Chaplick
Jacob Chaplick
Zena Glick Chaplick

Translated from the back of the postcard, addressed to my grandparents, Sophie Gillick and Meyer Endler:
To our dear cousin Sofyeh and cousin
Meyer Hendler and family
a souvenir of the Bar Mitzvah
of Aharon Tchaplik
from us Yakov, Zeena, Louis, Harry Tchaplik
Sonia Chana Gillik
Toronto, February 21, 1936

Left to Right: Morris Chaplick,Kay Walker, wife of Morris, Ida Chaplick, wife of David, David Glick, Norman Glick, son of David and Ida, Jacob Chaplick, Harry Chaplick, son of Jacob and Zena, Zena Glick, Hannah, daughter of Sonia Glick, Louis Chaplick, Jennie Reisman, wife of Louis, Charna Sugarman, mother of Jennie and Bella, Bella Reisman, Sonia Glick

Through finding an amazing 50th Anniversary celebration notice in the Canadian Jewish Review and discovering the descendants, I was able to find someone who could identify family members in this picture postcard. However the cousin Sonia who wrote the Bar Mitzvah postcard remains elusive. She is with her daughter Hanna in the pictures. When did she die and where is she buried? How are they related to my grandmother?
Moshe Pinchus Glick had 4 children: Zena, David, Sonia and Yaakov. Moshe’s father was Yankel  (Yaakov ) and his father was Pinchas.

I did find the index of Sonia's birth record, her name was Sura Gilyk and she was born 28 Feb 1905 in Kishinev, Bessarabia.
In her daughter Hannah's July 1948 Border Crossing, she is the contact person and her name is given as Sonia Feldman who lived at 373 Markham St, Toronto. In the 1966 celebration of her parents' 50th anniversary, Sonia and her husband are referred to as Mr. and Mrs. I Feldman. With them was Pearl, perhaps a daughter of Sonia's husband's first marriage.

Hannah was born 21 May 1927 in Kishinev. She died 1 Dec 2012. In her obituary I discovered that her father's first name was Aron. A relative told me that in her eulogy, she found out that Hannah's father died when Hannah was 4 and she grew up as an only child.

Gillicks from Massachusetts

A Gillick Branch in Boston

 Volko ( William/ Velvel/ Valbel/ Wolf ) Gillick, born 1860 and wife Pize/ Anna, born in 1863, had
3 daughters, Pearl, born 1883, Chana born 1899 and Sarah, born 29 Apr 1901.

Volko and Pize left Liverpool, England 12 May 1927 on S.S. Samaria and arrived in Boston, 21 May 1927. They were going to their daughter Pearl, her husband, Elias Sohn and their daughter Clara, born in 1912. The family lived at 19 Chestnut St, Chelsea, Massachusetts.

Chana ( Hanna ) Gillick arrived on the S.S.Canada on 21 Sep 1921. She was destined to her cousin, Louis Gillick, 34 Oliver St, Sherbrooke. In her Border Crossing in Oct 1922, through St Albans, Vermont, she headed for her sister Sura ( Sarah ) and her sister's husband Sam Mindick at 46 Market St, Brighton, Massachusetts

Sarah Gillick sailed 21 Jun 1921 on the  S.S. Sicilian. She gave the name of her father as Welwel from Ostropol. She was heading to her cousins, Louis Gillick and Joseph Gillick at 49 Oliver St., Sherbrooke, Quebec. She married Sam Mindick, 6 Jun 1922 in Montreal.  In July 1922, Sarah crossed the border at St Albans, Vermont and settled in Boston. Sarah and Sam had 4 children, Lillian, born 26 Apr 1923, Morris, born in 1925, Jeanette, born 29 Jun 1926 and Gloria, born in 1935.

Joseph and Fryma Gillick

The Gillick branch of the twins, Iosif  (Joseph) and Fryma  and their parents, Feiga and Iankel Gilik remain a mystery.

Both Iosif and Fryma were on the S.S. Megantic and arrived in Montreal, 24 Sep 1921. They both were heading for their cousin Leib Gilik ( Leib Avrumovitch Gillick) at 629 St. Urbain St., Montreal, Quebec. The Ocean Crossing has the name of their mother Feige in Ostropol.

Their 1922 Border crossing has them going to their Uncle Harry Bookbinder from Ostropol.

The LI-RA-MA Collection which had pictures of them gave both their birth dates as 1903 and the name of their father as Iankel and that he was deceased.

Another contact person whom they were headed for is hard to make out. Is the name Charles or a variation of Moshko ( which would be Moshe or Morris ) ? The address of 330 Charlevoix St is not one I have associated with anyone else. This remains a mystery.

Morris Gillick from Philadelphia

Family of Morris Gillick, father Hersh

Morris ( Moshko ) born 1890, his wife Bessie  (Busya) Lapida,  born 1889 and his son Harry ( Hershko ), born 30 May 1916 in Ostropol, left Novi Ligure, Italy, 13 Aug 1921 on S.S. Canada. They arrived in Montreal, 21 Aug 1921.  He was heading to his cousin, Leib Gilik ( Louis Gillick ) at 629 St Urbain St. His contact  from Ukraine was his Uncle Gedalia. Another son Benjamin ( Boris/ Boruch ) was born in Montreal, 4 Jun 1922.

The Border Crossing of Apr 1923 shows  the family crossing through St Albans, Vermont to Morris' brother Harry Gilik at 269a Vernon Ave, Brooklyn. The family lived on Leidy Ave in 1930 and their address was given in the 1940 Census as  4253 Leidy Ave in Philadelphia. Morris worked as a carpenter and metalworker.

Morris and Bessie died within 3 months of each other, Bessie, 16 Nov 1968 and Morris, 13 Feb 1969 in Philadelphia. The translations of Hebrew on their gravestones are Morris Gillick - Moshe son of Hershel and Bessie Gillick - Batya daughter of Pinchas.  Their son Benjamin died earlier, 7 Jan 1966 in Philadelphia.

So this branch has 2 brothers Hersh and Gedalia. Hersh had 2 sons, Morris and also Harry who used the name Gillis in the 1915 NY State Census. Morris named his first born Hershko, born 30 May 1916 so it seems probable that Morris' father would have died before 1916.
