Border Crossing leads to Canadian Passenger List

How a Border Crossing Can Help in Finding an Ocean Crossing

Kaufman Walder's Border Crossing Record was found with the name Wm Kauffman. Again the name was wrong and his given and surnames were in the wrong order.  He was 20 years old. His entry was through St Alban's Vermont in Dec 1916. His Petition for Naturalization had his Point of Entry as Rouses Point.

There is a variation of the location where he is from: Staro (Old ) Uschitsa, Podolia. Then there is a notation father with letters that don't look like the known name of his father, Moshe. 

The very important point is to realize that there is a second page to this Border Crossing. Here I found Kaufman's contact, a friend, Sam Bobchik, an unknown person to me. The first time I looked at this page, I hadn't paid attention to the headings of the next section and what the little numbers represent. Here was the secret to the clues in finding the Canadian passenger List!

Kaufman's information is on the bottom line in the list

Number 12/ 13 ( Heading was Date of Landing): Dec 1913

This was different from the 1930 Census: Immigration Year: 1908

Ship’s name: S.S. Teutonic

Port of Landing I couldn't make it out. When I looked at other places in the column, I saw Mont , abbreviated for Montreal but these letters didn't look like Montreal.

What I later found out was that it was Port for Portland ( Seaport landing in his Passenger List )

I then went to Canadian Passenger Lists

I did NOT search under name because for Kaufman, it was always problematic.

Since I had found out the date notation and the ship’s name Teutonic, I used that in Search in the Canadian Passengers Lists 

Name of Vessel (Teutonic )

I had 1898 for Birth; Russia for location and that is it.

Scrolling down, I found:

NAME ERROR AGAIN: This time, the name was :  

Walter Kaufman    Abt 1896    Russia    7 Dec 1913    Teutonic    Portland, Maine      Liverpool

Looking further in that record, there is a column, that has a destination contact. This time, it says his brother, who is a tailor ( spelled taylor ) and has been here for 8 years.

This is another puzzle as his only known brother, Louis was born about 1903. Since the year was 1913, this would make the brother's arrival at 1905. Impossible.

As well , the record has the info that the ticket was prepaid by his brother.

 

Could he be considering his contact, "brother" Jacob Goldberg whom I had heard had sent him money for a ticket? However as I had  discovered, Jacob had arrived in 1900

Adding to the confusion, Kaufman's 1930 census had indicated his arrival date as 1908.

Another type of Record that I had not seen seen before had Kaufman's border crossing information but the record was called Record of Registry and was dated 11 Dec 1930. This Record has Rouses Point as the Entry Point.

I want to pass on my genealogy friend, Deb's strategy in finding this record and what this type of record is. This is her explanation.

I found the photo card border crossing right on Ancestry and just did a general search in border crossings and passports for the first name K*fm*n. It is not a rare name but it is not terribly common in the context of this record set. Because there were only 25 results on 3 pages for Canada to US crossings it was easy to find him as Koffman Woelder.

This is part of an Alien Registration. The law was implemented in 1929 and additional laws were made part of it through the 1940s. Was administered by the US Department of Labor. These kind of documents were in the "A file" of aliens who had come to the US on visas and had not yet become citizens. Alien Registration usually included a photo.

It was great adding to what I know about Kaufman Walder but there is conflicting and puzzling information.

Goldenberg Name in Canadian Passenger Lists

Jacob Goldberg Arrived with the Name of Goldenberg

The Botosani Records surprised me with the name of Goldenberg. Goldberg was the name that was used by my great grandfather and his descendants in Canada. The 1911 Census listed the family under Goldberg. That was my mindset and the name that was familiar.

The Passenger Record for the family had eluded me since 2010 when I started this genealogy journey. 

I was trying  to help someone find his relative with the given name of Israel. I thought I would try a browsing strategy that my genealogy friend had suggested. I tended to include both given and surname in the search.This time, I searched:

First Name: Israel ( no surname )

Birth: Russia ( no year )

Arrival : 1899 (+or- 5 years )

Despite using Russia, meant for the other person, the result came up with my great grandparents' family who lived in Romania.

There I saw it; Israel Goldenberg  rather than Goldberg

Israel, age 9,  arrived 2 Nov 1901 on the ship, S.S. Simcoe

His UK Outward Passenger Record from Liverpool showed that the family left 24 Oct 1901

The address that Jacob was living at was 1039 St Dominique St.

In the left margin, there was a note.  To husband, no money"

The other names had transcription errors, alternate spelling or different names

The children were with their mother, with the spelling, Pine, age 30 ( transcription error, Perie )

Etta/ Yetta was under the name Jette, age 18

Leah was under the spelling Lea, age 13

Esther was under her second name, Rochel, age 11

Max was under the name  Morache, age 6 ( transcription error, Moracke )

Max's name in the UK Outward Passenger Record was Mordche ( transcription error, Mordelie )

Moe was under the name of  Moses, age 5

Moe's name in the UK Outward Passenger Record was Moses ( transcription error, Moser )

I knew that Jacob had arrived earlier with his oldest son, Benjamin Itzhak

Different versions were: that it took about 3 years until they found a home for his family, alternately, about a year later. The year had varied as well, 1902 or 1904.

I found the record for Jacob under the name, Jacob Goldenberg, age 40,  with his son with the name Itzig, age 17 ( transcription error, Marie )

They arrived 4 Aug 1900. The UK Outward Passenger Record from Liverpool had their departure on 17 Jul 1900 on the ship, S.S. Montfort. Jacob's name had a transcription error of Jant and Itzig's transcription error was Wm.

What an incredible challenge it is to find these Passenger Crossing Records!  It is really fantastic when I do find them. 

I wish I could talk to some one about the name change from Goldenberg to Goldberg. What were the reasons? Was there a legal change? Why didn't my great grandfather change his name back to Newman, the name he was born with? 

I would really like to find the family whose name Jacob adopted when he arrived in Romania from Russia. Was their name Goldenberg, not Goldberg? Did they immigrate also?

Israel Goldberg: What is in a Name?

From Israel Goldberg to George Gale

Israel Goldberg was one of my great uncles, a son of Jacob Goldberg and Pinie Schwartz. It was a surprise to me that the name on his Birth Record from Botosani was Goldenberg, not Goldberg, the name that I was familiar with. The name Israel was Strul in Romanian. He was born 16 Dec 1890 according to this record. This was another name in the evolution of name changes.

One of the Romanians who was responsible for getting the Botosani Records told me that all dates in the Romanian Records use the Julian calendar. This was used in Romania until 1919. To get the Gregorian calendar, 12/ 13 days need to be added.

The original family name was Newman, changed to Goldenberg, then Goldberg for Jacob and for his children. I was told that it was due to his wife, Lillian Sadie Zudick that he changed his name from Israel Goldberg to George Gale. 

Israel Goldberg and Lillian Sadie Zudick were married in 1918.










 

 Lillie was born 31 Aug 1895 in Ostropol and died 

1 Jan 1997 at Seal Beach, Orange, California.

Lillian Sadie Zudick was first married to Abraham Handelman, born 12 Feb 1890 in Ostropol. They had one daughter Ethel, born 7 Nov 1913 and died 3 Nov 2005 in San Diego, California. She married Milton Jacobs, born 21 Jul 1917 in New York, died 23 May 1979 in Los Angeles. They had no children.

Shirley Marion was born 23 Oct 1925.

 She married Joseph Grossman in 1949, Joseph was born 4 Aug 1920 and died 9 Mar 2002 in Westminster, Orange, California.

Shirley and Joe had 4 children, twins, Cheryl Lynn  (Richard Austin Willis ll) and Neal Lewis (Marianne Sutton), June Rochelle (Mark William Rose) and  David Elliot  ( Steven Cole )









 

Elsie Ray was born 11 Mar 1933. Her Hebrew name was Esther Ruhla. She was named after her father's sister, Esther who died in childbirth. Elsie married Stan Sharpe, born 4 Jul 1929. They had 3 daughters, Karyn Anne ( Mark Bates D'Alfonso ),  Linda Lee ( Tim Waits) and Laura J (Andrew Coles).

In  Jun 1964, Israel and his brother Moe were driving to Montreal to their nephew Gordie's wedding
( Minnie's son ). They made it as far as Alberquerque and veered off the road and crashed. Israel was killed instantly. Moe died several days later.

Esther Goldberg, a Life Cut Short at Only 33 Years Old

I had heard of Bea Oberhand, one of the many relatives who moved to California. My mother spoke very warmly of her.  I also knew how she very tragically lost her mother who died in childbirth when Bea's brother Oscar Jay was born.

Esther married Hyman Stein, 5 Dec 1915 in Montreal. They moved to New York. Bea was born 29 Oct 1916. In 1920, the family lived at 1185 Fulton Ave, Bronx. Esther died in childbirth. Her son, Oscar Jay Stein was born 21 Nov 1921.

After her mother died, Bea went to live with her grandmother until her father remarried. She became very close to the Goldbergs especially to Aunt Minnie who was like an older sister to her. Aunt Minnie was really loved by many family members!

Bea's father , Hyman married Ethel Apter. There is a 1925 Census that shows the family living at 1610 East 22nd St. Hyman and Ethel had a daughter, Helen , born in 1928. She did not get married.

Bea married Morris/ Moe Oberhand, born 11 May 1918 and died 31 Jan 2005. Bea died 2 Nov 2005. They had 2 sons, Eric ( Simin Toobian ) and Robert ( Viviane E. Lellouche ).

Oscar Jay Stein was called Oscar when he was a young boy. Then he changed his name to Jay Stone. He was named after his grandfather, Jacob Goldberg.

He went into manufacturing with his father-in-law and became President of the Raincoat Company, Naman. That is what led me to think Naiman was the original name.

What a long way I have come from first finding out that my great grandfather, Jacob Goldberg's original name was Neiman or #Newman. In fact if the family name was written at all in the Botosani, Romanian Records, it was Goldenberg. That was a huge surprise as I had always heard the name was Goldberg! Surnames were rarely recorded in those early records.

Jacob's mother smuggled Jacob from #Ushitzer Podolier to Botosani, Romania. The belief was that his mother Malca knew a branch of the Goldberg family and sent him to that family.

What else had I originally found out 4 years ago  from what Jacob Goldberg's granddaughter, Bea Oberhand had written at least 25 years ago?

Jacob Goldberg had a brother Moishe Neiman, who remained in Russia.

Moishe's daughter moved to New York  and was known as Bobba Cooper.

Her children from her first marriage were Morris Walder and Mrs. Cooperman.

Her children from her second marriage were Minnie, Mary and Irving Cooper.

Cousins, Louis and Kaufman Walder, from the Russian town of Ushitzer Podolier came to Montreal and then moved to New York.

From the 1988 Tape, Aunt Minnie related that Jacob sent money to Kaufman Walder to come to Montreal. Jacob then found out that relatives lived in New York.. His niece, Bobba Cooper, invited him to the wedding of her oldest daughter.  I heard that my great grandparents, Jacob and Pinie, brought Esther to the wedding because she was of marriagable age. There she met Hyman Stein at the wedding in 1914.

Just this week I found some census information that I had written down when I started my genealogy search in 2010. It was for a family of Hyman Cooper and Beckie Cooper. I had looked at the 1910, 1920, and 1930 Censuses.  I went over all the names and also looked at the New York Census of 1915 and 1925.

Several names of the children were there,  Morris, Minnie and Mary.  There was an Irving ( could the person be Isidore? ) Sarah, a new name, was in the 1910 Census and was the oldest daughter in this family. She was not with the family in the 1920 Census so this would fit if this was the wedding that the Goldbergs went to in 1914. She could be Mrs. Cooperman.

The 1930 census provided more clues!.What was the clincher was finding an A. Newman, age 50, born 1880 in Russia and noted as the brother-in-law of the head of the family. This would mean that he was "Beckie's " brother. So the name they used was Newman not Neiman. Beckie / Rebecca was the name that Bobba used in New York.

Searching now under the name Newman brought me to an Ancestry Family Tree with the familiar names and much more. I contacted the owner  by e-mail messages through Ancestry and I realized I had found the family!!

Charles Mehlman wrote that "Bobba" Cooper was his great aunt.

" Her sister Lena Newman married a Goldberg. Rebecca Newman/ Walder/Cooper 's father is Velvul as shown on my tree but was likely Moishe. I have no info on him other than he married my great grandmother Esther Rosenberg. She is buried in the First Uschitzer Plots in Mt Hebron, Flushing, Queens, New York."

"My father's mother Kate Newman was the sister of Rebecca Newman. I did call one of the Newmans. She said her father, Sam Newman, brother of Rebecca was sent to the Goldbergs and adopted by them. Same story, different people. We have Goldbergs in our family through marriage. Lena Newman married Meyer Goldberg. I knew him and Lena as a child. I never knew my grandmother as she died when I was a year old. Meyer died in 1953 and Lena in 1965."

"You mention Kaufman Walder and his brother Louis. They are somehow related to Rebecca's first husband Benish Walder. My father saw the brothers on a regular basis as a young man and I saw them as a child. I recently learned that they had come to the US from Canada."

Charles invited me to see his Tree so I have learned the names of an overwhelming number of people.

It will be very interesting  to see the gravestone of Rebecca or one of her siblings to find out what her father's name is: whether it was Moishe as I was told or Velvul that Charles was told. It would be great to find out what happened to this brother of my great grandfather Jacob.

Moishe/ Velvul's wife Esther Rosenberg died 22 Jul 1922. Upon learning of other Newmans, I looked at the Census Records. Esther lived with her daughter Lena , husband Meyer and their sons Dave and Ben in 1920. Esther was 80, widowed; had immigrated in 1899. So that would mean Esther was born about 1840.

Rebecca/ Beckie/ Bobba Newman was born in Ushitzer Podolia about 1875 and died 30 Mar 1959. She and her first husband Benish Walder had 3 children.

Sarah, born about 1892 ( according to the 1910 Census ) died 23 Feb 1953. She married Sam Cooperman, born 15 Jul 1891 and died 27 Mar 1955. They had one son Bernie, born 14 Dec 1928  (Miriam Gertov )

Morris/ Murray was born 14 Jan 1898 and died 10 May 1980. He married Ethel Allahut, born 1 Sep 1901 and died 27 Jun 1966. They had 3 children, Evelyn, born 9 Sep 1922 ( Charles Natkin ), Bernie, born 14 Jan 1927 died 15 Oct 2010 in Florida (Evelyn Leibowitz, Leona Mish), and Marty, born 14 Jan 1927 ( Doris Solomon )

Harry married Rose Heftman. Rose was born 19 Jul 1901 and died 19 Jun 1989. Minnie was born about 1906. She married Irving Grossberg, 29 Jun 1930. Irving was born 1907. They had 3 daughters, Elaine, born 22 Feb 1931 (Marvin Gold), Gladys, born 22 Mar 1931 (George Fusfield) and Cheryl (John Train).

Mary Cooper was born about 1907

Isidore/ Irving was born 7 Sep 1908 and died 3 Feb 2009. He married Gloria Jacobs, born 17 Aug 1915

Harry Walder is not in the 1910 and 1915 Census Records. He married Rose Heftman  and their first child Joseph was born 28 Aug 1918. Could Harry be Aaron? More information is needed to determine this.

Baila / Beila / Bessie Newman was born 1877 in Uschitzer Podolia, She married Efraim Housman/ Huzman. . They had 3 sons.

"Beile" immigrated with her 3 sons, "Srul", "Benisch" and "Munie" Huzmann. They left 5 Jul 1913 from Rotterdam on the ship, Noordam and arrived 14 Jul 1913 in New York. They were going to their husband and father, Froim Huzmann.

Samuel Housman/ Srul Huzman was born 15 Jun 1898 and died 21 Jan 1971 in New York. Sam married Bella Dickov, born 1900 and died 15 Jul 1971. They had 3 daughters, Estelle, born 23 Oct 1923, died 15 Jul 1978 ( Herbert Leopold ), Miriam, born 10 Dec 1927, died 12 Feb 1997 ( Hank Reynolds ) and Sally, born 7 Jul 1932, died 20 Feb 1979 ( Henry Ben Rubi)

Ben Housman/ Benisch Huzman was born 24 Aug 1900 and died Nov 1967. Ben married Claire Bass, born 8 Apr 1907 and died 3 Oct 1994. They had 2 sons. Ira, born 29 Sep 1937 married Kail Haimowitz. They had 3 children, Mark (Linda Himmelfarb), Joanne, and Beth, (Andrew Tenzer ). William married Arlynn Menachem and they had 2 sons, David ( Sarah Rasnic ) and Brian  Frank  (Amy Grubb ).

Murray was born 25 Jan 1905 in Sigourni, Romania and died 27 Jul 1978. Murray married Dinah Projan, born 12 Feb 1908 ( Birthdate given in husband Murray's 1935 Petition for Naturalization Certificate , alternate birthdate, 7 Sep 1907) and died 28 Oct 1987. They had one daughter Barbara, born 2 Oct 1933 and died 25 Nov 2007. Barbara married Benjamin Harrison, born 29 Jun and died 26 May 1966.

Murray's Petition for Naturalization is very valuable for the information it gives.

Alta Newman was born in 1880 and married Tauba. He was the A. Newman who lived with his sister Rebecca and her family in 1930 ( Census )

Lena Newman was born about 1880 and died 14 Oct 1965. She married Meyer Goldberg, born about 1878 and died 22 Sep 1953. Lena and Meyer had 3 children, Dave, Ben and Yetta

  1910 Census:

 Lena ( "Lillie" ) and her family were living beside her sister Katie ( "Gussie" ) and her family. Husband Charles was " George" and daughter Sally was " Sarah". Other children were Mary and Reuben.

  1905 Census " Gedalia" Mehlman, born 1877,  and ?Froim Mehlman, born 1873 were boarders

Dave, born about 1900, married Rose.  

Ben, born 5 Jun 1903, died 16 Dec 1992 ( Sara Klein, born 22 Jul 1909 in Montreal, died 9 Sep 1973.

Yetta was born  about 1906.

Samuel Newman was born about 1883 and died 5 Jan 1966. He married Bessie Lachterman, born about 1884 and died 5 Jan 1966. They had 4 children.

Minnie was born about 1906 and died in 1996.

Benjamin was born about 1908 ( Lilian Levinsohn )

Vallie was born about 1912 and died 25 Jan 1983 ( Al Skorneck )

Leo was born 21 Sep 1917 and died 22 May 1991 in Springhill, Hernando, Florida (Eleanor Goldfine)

   

Katie Newman was born 1885 in Ushitzer Podolia and died 15 Aug 1948. She married Charles Mehlman, born 15 Sep 1875 in Ushitzer Podolia and died 27 May 1924. They had 4 children.

Sally was  born 16 Apr 1904 and died 14 Nov 1956 in Dade County, Florida.

Mary was born 28 May 1908 and died 6 Sep 1977 ( Herman Wolf )

Ruby was born 1 Jul 1909 and died 26 Apr 1979 ( Marian Hartman, Georgia Johnson).

William was born 2 Mar 1914 and died 14 Feb 1980 ( Irene Esses, born 8 May 1920, died 3 May 1996 ).

The two Walder brothers, Louis and Kaufman's link to Benish Walder is to be determined.

Kaufman Walder was born 15 Apr 1896 in Ushitzer Podolia and died 30 May 1966. Kaufman married Yetta Franckel, born 15 Mar 1903 in Kaminetz, Russia and died 31 Aug 1983. Kaufman and Yetta had a son.

Henry E.( wife Harriet ), born 7 Mar 1933 and died 30 Aug 1985 in Huntington Station, New York.

Louis Walder was born in 1905 in Ushitzer Podolier and married Estelle Waxler, born 1913. Louis was a furrier as indicated in the 1940 Census. They had a son.

The Schwartz Connection

Pinie Schwartz Goldberg's Four Step-siblings

Beril #Schwartz  did not immigrate.

Beril's daughter Pinie, my great grandmother, did leave Botosani and lived in Montreal with her husband Jacob #Goldberg and their 8 living children. She had 4 step-siblings, children of her father and his second wife Esther. Aunt Minnie, Pinie's youngest child, Minnie Goldberg Zelman called them Yenta, Yankel, Bentsine and Schloyma. All 4 immigrated to Montreal.

When I started this genealogy journey, I found out the step-siblings' names. Aunt Minnie

had written to her granddaughter in a " A Grandparents Book" that she knew her mothers' 3 brothers and one sister. "My first home that I remember was on St George St, a second storey cold flat. My Uncle Bentsine/Benjamin and his family lived downstairs. My best friend was my cousin Esther Schwartz. My mother's sister Aunt Yenta, had 5 daughters, some were about my age. I loved to spend time at their house."

I have been on a quest to find out about the Schwartz family, their families and their lives.

Beril and Esther had 3 other children but they had died, Hana at 5 months, 14 Dec 1870, Sender at age 3, 13 Dec 1874 of angina diptheria  and Rifka  at 11 days, 14 Feb 1877. I was able to get many Botosani birth, marriage and death records through a project that was done in Botosani. Pictures were taken of the records and the people who coordinated this, sent them to those who paid for the digitized records.

I am very curious about Pinie's step siblings. I was able to find records through Ancestry, was able to contact descendant family members of 2 step siblings, Benny and Yetta but have not been able to find real life interconnections amongst any of the descendants of the step siblings.It is such a mystery because in the early days, the families lived next to each other or very close by.

All I can do is find out what I can about the individual families and hope that one day, someone will connect.

The four Schwartz children who survived were:

Jacob/ Yankel/ Yaakov, Yetta/ Ita/ Enta/ Yenta/ Ette, Schloyma/ Schloma/ Solomon and Benny/ BenZion/ Bentsine/ Bentin/ Burnett

In the Botosani Records, the family name is Sfart or Sfartz

The Romanian names for father Beril was Bercu, mother was Estera. Beril's father was Iancu ( Jacob) and his mother was Malca. Birth dates vary according to the records.

Beril was 84 at the time of his death, 24 Oct 1910 so that would mean he was born in 1826. What is particularly significant about his death record is that one of his sons was a witness. The name was translated as Solomon Sfartz , age 31. This would mean that Schloyma was the last child to immigrate.

It was daughter Yetta and her family that I first found out about. Later from her Botosani Birth and Marriage Records, I was able to learn more dates.

Yetta was born 24 Aug 1874 in Botosani. She died 5 Jan 1940 in Montreal.

Her name in her Botosani Marriage Record was Enta.

Her husband Kopel Moshe's family name was also Schwartz. I don't know if there is any relationship. His parents were Yaakov and Sura.

Their 3 Dec 1898 Marriage Record has his name as Cohos and his age as 25, so he was born in 1873. He died 8 Apr 1964 in Montreal.

Yetta and Kopel had 7 children.

Esther Schwartz, born 1900, died 18 Aug 1987 in Montreal.

Esther married Max/ Michal Metalin Metallin/ Mettarlin, a milliner and manufacturer. He was born about 1898 in Ostropol and died 7 Jun 1950 in Montreal.

Esther and Max had 3 children.

Gerald was born 24 May 1919 and died 21 Nov 1983. He married Sara was born 13 Feb 1921 and died 14 Oct 1983 in Montreal, Quebec. Gerald and Sara had one child Samuel Bernard Metallin, a financial analyst, born 1947.

Ethel, second child, born 17 Apr 1924, married Bill.

Shirley.

Fay Schwartz, a stenographer, born 1903, died 4 Apr 1993 in Montreal. Unmarried

Katie Schwartz, according to her gravestone, was born 14 Feb 1909 and died 13 Feb 1988 in North York, Ontario. Her Hebrew name was Ayga.

Kate married Max Leibovitch 31 Aug 1940 in Montreal. Max/ Menasha was born 12 Dec 1909 in Montreal and died 15 Jan 1997 in North York.

Katie and Max had one daughter, Evelyn who married Allan Kendall, 13 Mar 1966 in Montreal. Evelyn and Allan had 2 children, Michelle ( Steven Klupt ) and Andrew ( Candace ).

Lily Schwartz, born 18 Mar 1909, died 29 Sep 1994.

Lily married Max Neiss 25 Dec 1931. Max was born in 1903 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia and died 29 May 1960.

Lily and Max had one son, Marvin , born 8 Sep 1935. He married Sylvia Levitsky, 27 Dec 1964. Sylvia was born 31 Dec 1939 in Montreal. They have 2 sons, Michael Scott, born in 1971  (Angela Wilburn ) and Mark, born in 1973.

Ruth Schwartz was born 15 May 1910 and died 4 Apr 2004 in Montreal.

Ruth married Kiva Kapelusz, 30 Jul 1950. Kiva died 11 Jan 1994.

Ruth and Kiva had one daughter Paula who married Mark Hollinger.

Ben Schwartz, a news vendor was born 12 Apr 1911 and died 17 Feb 1987. Unmarried

Al Schwartz was born in 1913 and died 13 Aug 2002 

Al married Lily Lazarovitch. Lily was born 10 May 1918 and died 12 Mar 2006.

Al and Lily had 2 children.

Jerry Israel was born 8 Apr 1945 and  married Harriette. They have 3 children, Mitchell, Tamara and Jeffrey.

Irwin was born 1950 and married Georgina. They have 2 sons, Eli and Nigel.

It was son Benny and his family that I found out about next.

Benny ( Birth Record: Bentin sin Berl( son of Berl ) ) was born 18 Mar 1881 in Botosani, Romania.

He died 29 Aug 1950.

           

His obituary tells a lot about him, highlighting that he was a well-known furrier and a prominent member of the Jewish community. In 1910 he formed the firm, B. Schwartz and Sons. One granddaughter told me that her grandfather bought 2 houses in Trout Lake and one was very big. From when she was a baby until the age of 17, she spent summers from June to September there.

His mother Esther died 1 Jan 1891. I was told by one of his granddaughters that he was taken care of by an older sister so that may have been Pinie, my great grandmother. When they immigrated, their families lived in the same duplex. Benny and his family lived downstairs at 47 St George St.

The 1911 Census gives his immigration date as 1901.

Benny married Rose Goldberg 1 Nov 1903 in Montreal.

Rose was born 10 Jan 1883 and died 12 Aug 1966 from cancer of the esophagus.

Rose's mother also immigrated. Interestingly her mother's maiden name was Schwartz. Frayda Schwartz Goldberg died 4 Mar 1931 in Montreal at the age of 74 which would mean that she was born about 1857.

Benny and Rose had 6 children.

Esther was born in 1903 in Montreal. Another of Benny's granddaughters told me that there was a flu epidemic and within 2 days, Esther had died at the age of 10, 27 Dec 1913

Abraham/ Avraham Moshe/ Abraham Moses was born 25 Feb 1906 and died 10 Jan 1987. The address of 47 St George St in his Birth Record was one of the confirmation clues that the family was indeed connected to my great grandmother's family.

Abraham married Jeanne Rosenthal 2 Dec 1928 in Montreal. Jeanne/ Shayndel was born 25 Dec 1907 in Montreal and died 12 Apr 1991 in Montreal.

Abraham and Jeanne had 3 children, Mildred, Barry and Gerald Michael.

Barry was born 18 Aug 1934 and died 10 Sep 1962 of leukemia

Alex/ Eliayahu was born 14 Dec 1909 and died 26 Nov 1988.

Alex married Kate Mazur, 9 Nov 1933 in Montreal.

Alex and Kate had 3 children, Michael, Lester and Frayda

Lester was born 14 Feb 1941 and died in 2008.

Ida/ Chaya was born 25 Jul 1911 in Montreal and died 9 Mar 2009.

Ida married Samuel Harold /Shmuel Hersh Rosenthal (brother to Abraham's wife, Jeanne), 2 Jul 1933

Sam was born 29 May 1911 and died 7 Jan 1983 in Montreal.

Ida and Sam had 3 sons, Freddy, Joel and Lowen

Molly/ Malka was born 3 Jun 1916 and died 6 Aug 1967 of lymphoma after breast cancer.

Molly married Louis Schecter, 3 Jul 1938. Lewis was born 21 Mar 1910 and died 2 Apr 1987.

Molly and Lewis had 2 daughters, Sharon Lenora and Joyce.

Minnie / Manya was born 15 Feb 1918 and died 22 Oct 2009 in Montreal.

Minnie married Fred Mazur 30 Jun 1940 in Montreal. Fred was born 15 Apr 1908 and died 27 Nov 1998

Minnie and Fred had 2 children, Judah and Renee.

Jacob/ Yankel/ Yaakov was Pinie's oldest step sibling. The Botosani Records identified him and his wife  and their 11 children. This was remarkable because I only had his name before I received all these records. The Romanian names proved to be a challenge but gradually I found the names they used once they immigrated. The Quebec Drouin Records was a very valuable resource. 

The 1911 Census proved that this was indeed the family and that Jacob and his family were living at 777 Cadieux beside his brother Benny and his family at 773 Cadieux in Montreal.

Jacob's birth date varied between 1858-1866 depending on the different records of his children. Since his step-sister Pinie was born  after 1862, he would most probably have been born after 1862.

Jacob died 26 Mar 1933 in Montreal at the age of 70 according to his gravestone, so this would mean that he was born in 1863.

Jacob ( Iancu in Botosani Marriage Record ) married Malia Rotman, 22 Dec 1884 in Botosani, Romania. 

Malia was born about 1865 and died 6 Sep 1933 in Montreal.

Malia's name was Minnie in the 1911 and 1921 Census Records and on her gravestone and Molly in her daughter Ida's Marriage Record.

Jacob and Malia/ Minnie had 11 children. Six survived and immigrated with their parents

Ruhla/ Rachel Sfart/ Schwartz was born 16 Sep 1885 in Botosani, Romania.She is not in the 1911 or 1921 Census. I have not found the Ocean Crossing for the family so I do not know whether she immigrated with them. I have not found a Marriage Record for her.

Aron Hers Sfart was born 13 Dec 1886 in Botosani, Romania and died at 17 days, 30 Dec 1886 of marasmus ( severe malnutrition ). One of the witnesses on the Death Record was his grandfather Bercu Sfarti, age 50, tailor.

Mortha Sfart was born 4 Apr 1889 in Botosani, Romania and died at 14 days, 18 Apr 1889 of syphilis. Witnesses were his father, age 28, a tailor and his grandfather, Bercu Sfart, age 54.

Idas Sfart ( Ida Schwartz ) was born 22 Mar 1890 in Botosani, Romania and died 8 Dec 1976 in Montreal.

Ida married Israel Meyer Randolph, 28 Jan 1917 in Montreal. Israel Myer was born about 1895 in Ostropol, Volynnia, Russia and died 23 Sep 1949.

Ida and Israel Meyer had 3 children.

Morris was born 12 Nov 1917 in Montreal and died 13 Jun 1988 in Montreal

Joseph was born about 1920 according to the 1921 Census

Annie was born about 1921 according to the 1921 Census.

Leib Sfart ( Lorne Schwartz in the 1911 Census ) was born 29 Aug 1892 in Botosani, Romania and died 16 Jan 1959.

                                                                             

  

Lorne married Rachel Ruth / Ray / Rae Levenstein, 25 Nov 1919 in Montreal.

She was referred to as Rachel Gordon in her son Bertram Joel's Marriage Record, Sep 1957 in New York. Rachel's mother's maiden name was Gordon ( Rebecca Gordon ). Rachel/ Ray was born about 1895.

Lorne and Rachel had 3 sons.

Bertram Joel was born 12 Sep 1920 in Montreal. He married Sylvia Sawyer in Sep 1957 in New York.

Bernard Irwin was born 26 Jun 1924 in Montreal

Ira Schwartz, birth date unknown, died 13 Jul 1934 in Montreal.

Estera Sfart ( Ettie/ Attie in the 1921 Census ) / Esther  ( name on gravestone ) was born 16 Jan 1895 in Botosani, Romania and died 8 Aug 1956 in Montreal.

Ettie married Isidore Benderman, 9 Jun 1925 in Montreal. Isidore died 12 Mar 1978 in Montreal.

Ettie and Isidore had one daughter, Rose, born 17 Jun 1926 in Montreal.

Itic Sfart was born 20 Jan 1897 in Botosani, Romania and died 26 Jan 1897, at 6 days of a congenital abnormality in Botosani, Romania. Father was a witness.

Feiga Sfart was born 19 Nov 1897 in Botosani, Romania died 16 Jan 1898 at 1 month of a congenital abnormality in Botosani, Romania. One witness was the father, age 36

Malca Sfart, a twin to Feiga, was born 19 Nov 1897 in Botosani, Romania. Malca died 6 Nov 1902 at the age of 5 of scarlet fever in Botosani, Romania. A witnesss was her grandfather Bercu, age 60, a tailor.

Israel Sfart was born 26 Feb 1900 in Botosani, Romania. He was in the 1911 and 1921 Census Records but I have not found anything after this date.

Moise Sfart  ( Morris Schwartz ) was born 1 Jan 1903 in Botosani, Romania.

Morris married Bessie Randolph ( Sister to Ida's husband Israel Meyer ) 21 Mar 1926 in Montreal.

 






Schloma/ Shloyma/ Solomon was born about 1879.

He was named as son Solomon in his father Bercu/ Beril's Death Record, a very important as I then found out that he didn't immigrate until after his father died, 24 Oct 1910.

In listening to the  1988 tape that was done by Mary Hearst's son with his mother and Aunt Minnie  (Minnie Goldberg, youngest daughter of Pinie Schwartz Goldberg ) was when I learned that  Schloma was a widower and immigrated with 3 boys.

The 21 Feb 1911 Canadian Passenger Lists Arrival Record of Schloma, age 32, with 3 sons, Josel, born 1904, Berel, born 1907 and Salmon ( Solomon ), born 1908 fit the clues that I had found.

However I haven't found any certain information about the family after their arrival.
